Ginkgo is a type of tree originating from China, which was declared the tree of the millennium by the German "Tree of the Year Board of Trustees". The ginkgo tree won this title in part due to the story of a ginkgo temple tree which grew new shoots almost directly after being consumed in the flames of the atom bomb in Hiroshima in 1945. For this reason, it is considered a monument to environmental protection and peace, and is held in high esteem in Chinese philosophy for its power-bestowing, life-prolonging properties.
The leaves of the ginkgo tree are most frequently used. The extract thus obtained is said to support our sense of balance and to increase memory and concentration performance.
